Smart Women Tip #10: It’s Never Too Late to Become a Millionaire

Smart Women Tip #10: It’s Never Too Late to Become a Millionaire

In a recent Smart Women Survey, almost 38% of our readers said that their biggest challenge is money.  Today, I want to share a discussion my hairdresser, Rachel DeMar, and I had last year.

Rachel told me that she was celebrating her 10-year anniversary as a hairdresser.  After congratulating her, I asked her if she had set up the Roth IRA retirement account we had discussed a few years ago.

Smart Money Tip #8: It Pays to Plan Ahead

Smart Money Tip #8: It Pays to Plan Ahead

While homeownership has many benefits, most homeowners will warn you that it’s necessary to plan for maintenance. Since your home is often your largest investment, keeping it properly maintained is very important. This includes planning for both the expected and unexpected maintenance issues. I suggest creating a ‘Money Bucket’ for each situation.  A Money Bucket is a savings account that you add funds to from every paycheck so that you have cash reserves available when the funds are needed.

Smart Money Tip #5: Let’s Talk about Budgeting to Save More and Spend Less

Smart Money Tip #5: Let’s Talk about Budgeting to Save More and Spend Less

Although it might seem obvious that we should spend less and save more, but as a society, we have been taught and are actually encouraged to spend every penny we earn. We’re constantly tempted with offers to buy now and pay later. These messages lead many to live beyond their means. As a result, they live paycheck-to-paycheck or client-to-client! This habit ends up destroying any chance we have for financial freedom and financial peace.

Smart Money Tip #4: Strive for Dynamic Change through Smart Choice, Consistency, and Time

Smart Money Tip #4: Strive for Dynamic Change through Smart Choice, Consistency, and Time

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it.  He who doesn’t … pays it.” – Albert Einstein

My goal through the Smart Money Tip series has been to impart strategies to help you create and grow money. One of the very best ways to grow your money is through the magic of compound interest.

Let’s start with one of my favorite stories. If you were given the choice between taking $3 million in cash today or a single penny that doubles in value every day for 31 days, which would you choose?

Smart Money Tip #2 – Bargain hunting and the scarcity mindset

Smart Money Tip #2 – Bargain hunting and the scarcity mindset

Last week, we talked about how to make and save money, and then what to do with it.  I even mentioned that if you could save $500 a month for 20 years, you could end up with over $250,000 in retirement.  So, if you missed that video, click the link below to watch it.

That video triggered a great question from one of our members.  If you have questions, be sure to send them in by visiting our Smart Women’s Coaching Facebook Fan Page.

Deb writes…

“Katana, I have a question about your latest newsletter and video. In it, you speak of needing a new $400 vacuum and finding it for $110 with shipping. I was always taught that if you have a ‘bargain-hunter’s’ mindset or an ‘I will never pay full price for anything’ mindset, that the mindset will determine who you will attract in your business, so you would attract people who always want a discount or for you to cut your price. I would love to know your thoughts about this!”

Don’t Make These Three IRA Mistakes

Don’t Make These Three IRA Mistakes

I opened my first Individual Retirement Account (IRA) when I was in my twenties. I realize I’m going to date myself, but it was back when interest rates were double digits. I still recall how excited my husband and I were when we each invested $2,000 into our IRAs.

A traditional IRA is basically an account that allows you to set funds away for retirement while the money grows tax-deferred, meaning you won’t have to pay income taxes on it until you take it out. If you qualify, you can deduct that investment from your income on your tax return. It’s a pretty cool deal – especially if you start saving when you are very young.

3 Steps to Transform Your Beliefs About Money

3 Steps to Transform Your Beliefs About Money

Several years ago, I was interviewed by Lorwai Lan, the brilliant radio show host of Your Money and Your Mindset. My topic was It’s Never Too Late to Become a Midlife Millionaire. I later discovered that this interview was the top downloaded podcast on the CEM network with over 30,000 downloads. You can access it by clicking here.

One of the things I discuss is mindset. The idea of mindset is so important because unless you have a healthy relationship with money, no matter how much you earn or have, you will never be able to keep it, grow it, or feel secure and joyful about it. This is why 70% of lottery winners squander away their winnings within a few years. We have all heard these stories and think, “I’d never do that!” Oh really?

Are You Confident About Retirement?

Are You Confident About Retirement?

My husband and I recently met with our financial planner, John Steves.  He is my fabulous former partner at Ameriprise.  Yes, even though I am a Certified Financial Planner, I still have my own advisor. It keeps my husband and me disciplined.  Besides, I am a ‘big picture’ person, and John is a ‘detail’ person who does the number-crunching and also has his ears and eyes on the market daily.

Having a trusted adviser is one of the very best gifts you can give to yourself.  I can assist you with the big picture, the discovery process, and help you create a game plan. However, you also want someone to run your financial plan, looking at every area of your financial life, including what would happen if you died prematurely or couldn’t do what you do anymore.  Too often I hear of advisers just looking at the investments or just the insurance.  True financial planning includes six areas of your life:

Are you ready to take the Leap?

Are you ready to take the Leap?

I was talking with a friend yesterday who told me that she had lunch with several women in their late 50s and early 60s who were discussing their “Dream Jobs.” I couldn’t believe it. Most women would be planning for retirement, but instead, these ladies were dreaming about their perfect job.

Why the mindset shift? I believe it’s because many women have spent their lives living someone else’s dream. By midlife, the kids have probably left home and the spouse may be approaching retirement and looking to slow down. Many women are finding this to be the ideal time to explore, reinvent, and try something totally new.

Pura Vida! The Secret to Living 100 Years

Pura Vida! The Secret to Living 100 Years

Over a decade ago, I visited a friend in Costa Rica and fell in love with the country. Since then, I have returned eight times; leading women’s retreats, celebrating my daughter’s 18th birthday, and just exploring the countryside. I loved it so much that I almost bought a ten-acre farm in the Nicoya Peninsula.

The Nicoya Peninsula is known as one of the Blue Zones, famous for the high rate of Centenarians — people living to 100 and beyond. In fact, in June 2012, Costa Rica reported 416 citizens over the age of 100. With just 4.5 million citizens, that’s a huge number.

Are You Living from Your Heart?

Are You Living from Your Heart?

On last week’s show, I talked about my four-step quick goal-setting technique that I came up with on one of my bike rides. Yesterday, I was out riding my bike again, and thought I would head back almost as soon as I started. It was hot, I had been delayed till the hottest time of the day, and I was exhausted. In addition, I have really bad arthritis and was having a lot of pain that day.

All of a sudden, I remembered my friend, Keven Degen and thought, “What in the world are you complaining about Katana?” My dear friend, Kevin, had passed away six years ago on August 10, 2010 at age 52 after a bike accident.

Your Simple Three-Step Process to Winning the Gold

Your Simple Three-Step Process to Winning the Gold

In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says to “start with the end in mind.” This concept is important whether you are starting a diet, writing a report, planning a garden, and even planning your life. I have been watching the 2016 Olympics, and last night, I saw an interview with American athlete Ryan Murphy who took gold in the 100m backstroke. Like many Olympians, going to the Olympics has been his goal since he was a small child. We saw drawings (or what we would call vision boards) that Ryan had created of him swimming the back stroke when he was young. These images were captioned, “I look forward to being the best swimmer in the world one day.” This is such a great example of how having clarity, passion, and focus about what you want, and then executing that vision with systems and a coach is so important not only for athletes but for every part of life.

Quick Five-Step Goal Setting

Quick Five-Step Goal Setting

A few weeks ago, I injured myself while pulling up our boat anchor. I actually tore the cartilage in my ribcage; it was incredibly painful. Because of this injury, I wasn’t able to ride my bike for several weeks. However, just a couple of days ago, I was finally able to saddle back up and go for a ride.

The first ride was tough. I gave up halfway because I was having problems with breathing deeply. I was just happy that I could get back on the bike and make it home. The next day, I started out for another ride, and before I even left the neighborhood, I contemplated heading back because I was having a hard time breathing again. I also noticed that I had forgotten my helmet. Perfect! I had a great excuse to give up and go back home! I went back and got my helmet, but instead of quitting, I started out again, determined to complete my normal ten-mile trek.

Become a Change Agent with Three Simple Steps

Become a Change Agent with Three Simple Steps

For years now, I have had the pleasure of interviewing and getting to know women who are leading change in the world. These are women who are either on the cutting edge as a thought leader, giving selflessly of their time, energy, and wisdom through their work, and volunteering and teaching others while some are authors and speakers and others are sharing their wealth through philanthropy. All of this is what I call Creating Legacy.

We are normally drawn to become passionate or involved in a cause because we either notice something that we get angry about and we feel something needs to be done about it, or we notice something that moves us in a positive way and feel attracted to support that cause with our time, energy, and money.

How False Beliefs Sabotage Our Inner Peace

How False Beliefs Sabotage Our Inner Peace

“Everything we do is infused with the energy with which we do it. If we’re frantic, life will be frantic. If we’re peaceful, life will be peaceful. And so our goal in any situation becomes inner peace. Our internal state determines our experience of our lives; our experiences do not determine our internal state.”

~ Marianne Williamson

I received this quote by Marianne Williamson from our 100 Days of Inspirational Quotes and wanted to share it with you. I found it interesting because I believe our early childhood experiences create our beliefs, and our beliefs create our thoughts. Our thoughts in turn determine how we show up in the world and how we react to new experiences.

So for most of us, the idea of living in a state of inner peace, joy, abundance, and love is the goal. Getting there can often seem futile because of the way our mind works.

Don’t Keep Your Dreams in a Box

Don’t Keep Your Dreams in a Box

Have you ever had a defining moment when you just knew your life would never be the same? I remember the time I was leading a financial literacy workshop called, Smart Women Finish Rich, for the Federal Reserve’s Money Smart Week. This was a very popular topic, so my phone rang off the hook with women wanting directions to the event. In addition, given that I was offering it in an affluent area, something else strange happened. Quite a few women asked if the bus drove by the location of the workshop.

The Life You Lead is the Legacy You Leave

The Life You Lead is the Legacy You Leave

On June 2nd, I was invited to speak about Legacy to the Women’s Division for Project HOPE during their Annual Meeting at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.

I was thrilled to speak on this important topic:  The Life You Lead is the Legacy You Leave.  Legacy is more than money — it’s what people think, feel and remember when they speak or hear your name.

Are you taking all your vacation time?

Are you taking all your vacation time?

I just watched Michael Moore’s new film, Where to Invade Next. He plays the role of “invader” and visits countries overseas to learn how the U.S. can improve the way it does things like education, health care, prisons and much more. At the end of the film, we find out that many of the counties are simply implementing ideas that they said they had gotten from us.

Don’t miss your greatest moment for happiness!

Don’t miss your greatest moment for happiness!

March 8 was International Women’s Day, and to celebrate, I attended an event hosted by the International Women’s Forum of Michigan, featuring the spirited dynamo, Gisela Becker, founder of SPANCO. Gisela has worked tirelessly to build a hospital, a dental clinic, and an orphanage as well as provide educational and vocational opportunities for children in need in Ghana. In fact, on February 8th, she returned home from a trip to Ghana where she travels about four times per year after loading a 40 foot ship container with goods like bicycles, mattresses, clothing, sewing machines, and technology devices . What makes this even more amazing is that Gisela Becker is 86 years young! Seriously, meeting her last night and listening to her personal story of leaving Germany as a teenager with just $100 in her pocket to come to the US, as well as how she ended up where she is today was so inspirational.

Open the Floodgates of Prosperity with Gratitude

Open the Floodgates of Prosperity with Gratitude

The birth of Venus

It’s been said that everything is energy, and that we attract what we focus on. In fact, the first chapter of the book, Think and Grow Rich, written in 1937 by Napoleon Hill, is called “Thoughts are things.”

Today, this idea has become a Universal Truth. So why is it that many of us find ourselves overworked, overwhelmed, stressed and focused on what we don’t have or what’s NOT working?
